Competition Expectations

Competition Expectations

  • Don’t forget to block off the entire weekend for each competition! We truly do not receive the schedule until 4-10 days before and will not be able to make any assumptions on which dances will perform which days.
  • Small gift for big/little at the first competition and please try to see each other dance if the opportunity is there!
  • Dance captains should have music ready to rehearse with the group and are responsible for remembering the number assigned to their group at each competition. They will also be the one to stand up and receive all awards for that particular group. If there are multiple dance captains, they will take turns.
  • Soloists please have your music ready to rehearse on your own.
  • We expect all of our dancers to be respectful to their parents, teachers, fellow ST dancers, and all other studio dancers. This applies to backstage, in the audience, and in the dressing rooms.
  • Teachers will not be available to assist with anyone’s hair or makeup so now is the time for questions!
  • Remember to keep all negative remarks to yourself until you are in the car or at home. There will inevitably be things that we all do not like or find inappropriate, but we try to be mindful of the people around us! This rule applies to surrounding restaurants as you never know who is sitting at the table next to you. *Please share this with any family members that are attending these performances.
  • Cheer during for sassy/character dances but not during difficult skills or contemporary/lyrical.
  • It’s important to remember that every competition is complete different. The way the events are organized, the scoring system, the awards system, the categories, and the judges are all different every time. One set of judges may love a particular dance of ours at the first competition and then it scores lower at the next, or vice versa.
  • Awards are so much fun and we of course all love receiving them, but the most important thing about competing is that every dancer is working their hardest and learning with each new performance! Let’s all try together to focus the positives after each competition comes to a close and less on the negatives!
